Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Collaboration Paintings
This book was published on the occasion of Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Collaboration Paintings at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. The exhibition presented large-scale paintings from the artistsâ collaboration in 1984â85, which was prompted by Basquiatâs dealer, Bruno Bischofberger. In their sustained creative dialogue, Warhol employed hand painting, contributing images of brand logos, package designs, and other subjects that recalled the strategies of his early Pop works of the 1960s. Basquiat worked in his distinctive graffiti-inspired style, energizing the compositions with images, words, and gestures.
The catalogue is fully illustrated, with a foldout reproducing the monumental painting African Masks (c. 1984â85). It includes Hilton Alsâs essay âBasquiat and I,â which analyzes the artistsâ friendship and collaborative works, referencing exhibited paintings.
