Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Ashley Bickerton: Ornamental Hysteria at Newport Street Gallery, London. It documents the major surveyâwhich was drawn from Damien Hirstâs Murderme collectionâfeaturing work made by Bickerton over a period of some three decades, from his âconsumeristâ wall sculptures of the mid- to late 1980s to the vivid and idiosyncratic mixed-media paintings and sculptures of more recent years.
In addition to color photographs of the works in the exhibition, the book features the essays âAshley Bickerton: Parodic Iconographerâ by novelist and travel writer Paul Theroux and âSurfing the Face of Modernism: The Life and Work of Ashley Bickertonâ by Nicola Trezzi, director and curator of CCA Tel Aviv-Yafo in Israel. Also included is an introduction by Hugh Allan, senior curator at the Newport Street Gallery, and an in-depth interview with the artist by New York filmmaker Roddy Bogawa.
