Cy Twombly: Inscriptions

Throughout his career, artist Cy Twombly often inscribed his work with written notes and fragments of poetry and other texts. This six-volume publication by art historian Thierry Greub is a definitive record of these inscriptions, tracing Twombly’s long engagement with literary sources from 1953 until his death in 2011. The catalogue collects, for the first time, all 901 textual notations in Twombly’s works, presenting them with transcriptions and identifying their sources in context. An essay in the first volume of the set draws upon the fields of transcription and ascription to analyze the artist’s textual references and the relationship between the scriptural and the graphic throughout his oeuvre.
