Cy Twombly: Zeichnungen & Bilder Set

This set unites two of the most definitive early publications on Cy Twombly, both of which were organized by Heiner Bastian. The first title is Zeichnungen, 1953–1973, a German-language catalogue published by Propyläen Verlag, Berlin, and presenting twenty years of Twombly’s works on paper. Color photographs of ninety works are presented chronologically, and the book contains an essay by Bastian along with a selected bibliography.

The second book—Bilder Paintings, 1952–1976, Volume 1—was edited by Bastian and is the first and only realized volume of a catalogue raisonné project for Twombly’s paintings, also published by Propyläen Verlag. This book includes nearly a hundred color reproductions of paintings made by the artist over the course of twenty-five years. Though superseded as a catalogue raisonné, this book remains an excellent reference, with superb reproductions of early paintings, which were selected by Bastian in consultation with the artist. The publication also features an extensive introductory essay by Bastian in English and German that interprets and contextualizes Twombly’s painting practice, as well as a brief chronology, bibliography, and exhibition history.
