Egon Schiele—Jenny Saville

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Egon Schiele—Jenny Saville at Kunsthaus Zürich in 2014–15, which brought together works by the two artists for the first time. Revealing stylistic and thematic affinities in their body-landscapes and portraits despite the decades separating them and the differences in brushwork, curator Oliver Wick described the exhibition’s pairing as “a juxtaposition that unites contrast and convergence.”

With over 160 illustrations, this large-format English-edition exhibition catalogue reproduces paintings and works on paper by both artists at an expansive scale and features new scholarship on each artist separately and within the context of the other’s work. Oskar Bätschmann, Diethard Leopold, Helena Pereña, Franz Smola, and Wick analyze aspects of Schiele’s figure painting and landscapes; Maria Becker and Martin Harrison devote essays to Saville’s work; and Martin Harrison and Oliver Wick compare the two artists’ oeuvres. The title also includes chronologies on both artists, as well as archival photographs.
