Baselitz: Naked Masters

This book was published on the occasion of Baselitz: Nackte Meister at Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Vienna. The exhibition presented the artist’s works alongside historical paintings of nude figures from the museum’s permanent collection, initiating a visual and critical conversation. Baselitz selected all works in the exhibition and concentrated on the nude to explore the history of the form and establish its continued relevance. Naked Masters juxtaposed nearly eighty of his works with forty from the collection, including canvases by Hans Baldung Grien, Lucas Cranach the Elder, Peter Paul Rubens, and Titian.

The publication features plate images of all exhibited works as well as installation photography. It includes a foreword by Sabine Haag; a text by Baselitz; illustrated essays by Eric Darragon, Rudi Fuchs, Frédérique Goerig-Hergott, Daniel Hammer-Tugendhat, Norman Rosenthal, and Andreas Zimmermann; and a conversation between Zimmermann and the artist.
