Howard Hodgkin

This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Howard Hodgkin at Gagosian, Britannia Street, London. Composed with assertive brushstrokes, Hodgkin’s expressive abstractions embody a spirit of directness and spontaneity. Incorporating frames and painted wooden supports, the exhibited paintings conjure the freedom and expansiveness of American landscapes while disclosing intimate emotional affect, interpreted through abstract gestures and vivid palettes.

The publication documents the works in the exhibition—conveying their scale and detail across numerous gatefolds—alongside studio photographs that show the creative space in which Hodgkin achieved this dynamic body of work. It also features a new essay by Alan Hollinghurst discussing the visceral sensory impact and candor of Hodgkin’s paintings and “Chlorophyll for the Spirit,” a speech presented by Nobel laureate Seamus Heaney in 2006 for Hodgkin’s retrospective at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin.
