Kids of the Diaspora: Proper Love Shirt for Amoako Boafo

This limited-edition organic cotton T-shirt was produced by Kids of the Diaspora in collaboration with Amoako Boafo and the Belvedere Museum, Vienna, in conjunction with the artist’s 2024–25 exhibition Proper Love—his first solo presentation at a European institution. Boafo reimagines the canon of portraiture, emerging as a key artist in defining the contemporary culture of Africa and the African diaspora. To depict the figures in his paintings, he manipulates pigment with his fingers, tracing gestures through direct touch.

The front is printed with a short text written by Kids of the Diaspora for the artist—“COME MY DARLING, SIT WITH ME. THE PLACE WHERE I SEE YOU AND YOU SEE ME, PAINTING THAT PROPER LOVE STORY”—and the back is adorned with the exhibition title. Every purchase helps to support Boafo’s artists’ residency program in Accra, dot.ateliers, which was founded to empower artists and strengthen the cultural ecosystem of the city.
