Mary Weatherford: The Flaying of Marsyas
This book was published in conjunction with Mary Weatherford: The Flaying of Marsyas at Museo di Palazzo Grimani, Venice. For this exhibition, Weatherford created a series of new abstractions in Flashe paint and neon tubing that are directly inspired by Titianās late-period masterpiece of the same title from circa 1570ā76. Both gruesome and beautiful, Titianās painting depicts a myth in which Apollo flayed the satyr Marsyas after defeating him in a music competition.
The publication documents the fifteen paintings in theĀ series alongside installation photography and features an essay by Francine Prose that considers these works in relation to the myth. Prose analyzes the artistās distinctive use of color and neon light, and her engagement with the subject and its interpretation in poetry and painting.
