Remembered Light: Cy Twombly in Lexington
This book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Sally Mann: Remembered Light: Cy Twombly in Lexington at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. Captured by Sally Mann between 1999 and 2012, these color and black-and-white photographs record her impressions of Cy Twomblyâs working spaces in Lexington, Virginia. Mannâs poetic photographs of his home, studio, and works in progress are absent of Twomblyâs actual presence but imbued with evidence of his creative life.
In addition to sixty photographs, the fully illustrated catalogue includes the essay âAn Absence Turns into a Presenceâ by Simon Schama, which analyzes the presence of both Twombly and Mann in the photographs; a conversation between Mann and Edmund de Waal exploring the works and what they reveal about both artists; and a poem by Mark Strand.
