Steven Parrino

This book was published on the occasion of Steven Parrino at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York, a selective survey of paintings, drawings, and sculptures by the artist. The exhibited works reveal Parrino’s keen awareness of painting’s history and the possibilities that linger even after its oft reported demise. They find the artist disrupting the canvas itself—an outwardly simple gesture that infuses his project with physical and metaphysical heft—and combining iconoclastic and countercultural imagery with abstract elements to arrive at, in his words, a “post-punk existentialism.” The catalogue reproduces more than fifty works and features “Nature Mortes Vivantes,” an essay by art historian, curator, and writer Vincent Pécoil.
