Think of Them as Spaces: Brice Mardenâs Drawings
This book was published on the occasion of Think of Them as Spaces: Brice Mardenâs Drawings, an exhibition organized in 2020 by the Menil Collection, Houston, which traveled to Kunstmuseum Basel. An exploration of the catalytic role that drawing played in Mardenâs practice, the presented works spanned the entirety of Mardenâs career to date, including Studies for âThe Seasonsâ (1975), Mirabelle Addenda (1979), Shell Drawings (1985â87), Cold Mountain Studies (1988â91), Twelve Letters from Borobudur (2010), 15 Ă 15 (2015â17), River Study (2015), and Post and Lintel (1984/2019).
In addition to full color plates of the exhibited works, the catalogue includes an essay by Kelly Montana that introduces Mardenâs practice, noting ways in which âdrawing is a site for evolution and invention for Marden,â as well as an interview with the artist by Josef Helfenstein that provides insight into Mardenâs process.
