Jean-Michel Basquiat
This poster was produced in 1986, in conjunction with the exhibition Jean-Michel Basquiat at Larry Gagosian Gallery, 510 North Robertson Boulevard, Los Angeles. This was Basquiatâs third exhibition with the gallery during his lifetime.
Recalling the assemblages of found objects that Basquiat used to make the paintings featured in the exhibition, this image brings together an eclectic combination of motifs around a central figure, which is represented in an âX-rayâ style with internal organs indicated in drawing and writing. Drawings of a gasoline pump and spiked metal gates surround this central figure, as well as anatomical terms and handwritten lists of grains, elements, and American corporations. The exhibition details are reproduced in Basquiatâs handwriting along the posterâs bottom edge.
