Richard Prince: Bob Dylan

This poster featuring Untitled (Dylan) (2014) was produced in 2025, in conjunction with Richard Prince: Bob Dylan, an exhibition at Gagosian, Beverly Hills. The trio of ten-foot-square paintings depict in gauzy black-and-white a detail of the famous portrait shot of Bob Dylan by Jerry Schatzberg, which was reproduced on John Berg’s cover design for the 1966 double LP Blonde on Blonde. Prince builds on the slight blurriness of Schatzberg’s photograph—reportedly a consequence of shivering brought on by freezing New York weather—by making each image a bit fuzzier than the one that precedes it. Combining personal involvement and cool distance, he acknowledges the emotional and cultural significance of the original representation by filtering it through a destabilizing layer of visual noise.
