Roy Lichtenstein Galerie Ileana Sonnabend Catalogues
This collection includes two original catalogues published for Roy Lichtensteinâs 1963 and 1965 exhibitions at Galerie Ileana Sonnabend, Paris. The covers of both books feature the artistâs name and a pattern inspired by his signature Benday dots.
The first exhibition, presented in June 1963, was Lichtensteinâs first solo show outside the United States. Its catalogue reproduces works from the exhibition in black and white, opening and closing with double-page spreads illustrating Draw (1963) and Hot Dog (1963). Texts in French include essays by Alain Jouffroy and Robert Rosenblum and notes on Lichtenstein by Ellen Johnson.
The 1965 exhibition focused on landscape paintings by the artist, and its catalogue includes a two-page color spread of the work Landscape (1965). It also features a French translation of âWhat is Pop Art?,â an interview with the artist by critic Gene Swenson that was first published in the November 1963 issue of Artnews.
