Lichtenstein Remembered
This poster featuring Coup de Chapeau I (1996) was produced in 2023, in conjunction with the exhibition Lichtenstein Remembered at Gagosian, 980 Madison Avenue, New York. Organized in close collaboration with the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein, this exhibition of Roy Lichtensteinâs sculptures and related studies was curated by Irving Blum in recognition of the centenary of the artistâs birth.
The double-sided poster pictures both the front and back of Coup de Chapeau I, playing off the tensions between two- and three-dimensionality that are fundamental to Lichtensteinâs approach to sculpture. Instantly recognizable as the artistâs work, the sculpture literally tips a hat to his imagery, with a yellow fedora that evokes Dick Tracy, an arcing form recalling his stylized representations of brushstrokes, and a dynamic burst that resembles his 1960s paintings and sculptural renderings of explosions.
