Seeing Is Believing: Lee Miller and Friends

This poster featuring Shadow Patterns on Lee Miller’s Torso (1930) by Man Ray was produced in 2023, in conjunction with the exhibition Seeing Is Believing: Lee Miller and Friends at Gagosian, 976 Madison Avenue, New York. Centered on the long, fruitful relationship between the American photographer Lee Miller and English Surrealist painter, collector, and art historian Roland Penrose, the exhibition included work by artists in their circle, including Joseph Cornell, Max Ernst, Dora Maar, Man Ray, Henry Moore, Valentine Penrose, and Pablo Picasso. With its overlay of shadows cast by a curtain onto the contours of Miller’s figure, this photograph epitomizes the bold spirit of Miller’s and Man Ray’s collaborative innovations.
